The Wooburn Festival Visual Arts Exhibition is at the heart of the Wooburn Festival. St. Paul’s Church Hall is converted into a professional and vibrant art gallery showing original paintings, sculpture, ceramics, glass and jewellery from the best artists in the Chilterns and beyond.

This year’s featured artist is Sue Fawthrop. Originally living in South Bucks, Sue moved to Dorset several years ago. She says she is honoured, delighted and somewhat daunted to have been invited to be featured artist for this year’s Wooburn Arts Festival.

She’s drawn and painted most of her life, flirted with many styles of working and finally settled on painting the entire piece out of doors, directly from the landscape using oil paint, and occasionally gouache.

Sue finds plein air painting is a delicious occupation. Trying to capture one elusive ray of light as it hits a particularly bright field in the distance, whilst hanging on to your hat and easel in a high wind, is exciting. You can’t work carefully if the brush is bouncing on the surface and she’s sure that the struggle against the elements comes through in the energy of the piece. Her aim is to create as much air and distance as possible on her little boards, working quickly and using big brushes and broad strokes to distill the essence of the scene without losing its essence. She is drawn by strong areas of contrast, especially light and shade and keeps detail to a minimum.

Her subjects are mainly Dorset scenes, both coast and countryside. Sue lives in a small rural community surrounded by rolling hills and woodland. There are also images from her travels here and abroad.
