Film Night – Red Island

Drawing on his own memories of growing up in post-colonial Madagascar during the early 70s, French writer-director Robin Campillo has crafted a stylish and compelling remembrance of things past.

Set on a French air base in the years after the island became independent, we watch the unfolding tale through the eyes of a youngster who prefers to wallow in the cartoon book adventures of 12-year-old Fantomette, a crime-fighting masked superheroine.

Imagine The Go-Between meets White Mischief as 10-year-old Thomas (Charlie Vauselle) is an uncomprehending spectator to the often shamelessly bacchanalian goings-on among the real-life adults in his ex-pat world.

Child’s-eye dramas have been a regular over the years at the festival, whether set in the dangerous slums of Brazil (Trash) or on the mean streets of Lebanon (Capernaum).  Madagascar may be a more gently exotic clime, but still offers an equally captivating and cinematically fascinating backdrop.
