A Family Perspective by Mette Gauguin
An illustrated talk by Mette Gauguin (great grand-daughter of Paul Gauguin)
Gauguin has since his death invited probably more half-truths, lies and myths than virtually any other artist. Mette has lost count of the times people have said to her, ah…. Gauguin wasn’t he the one who threw up his job and abandoned his family to go and live in the South Seas with a string of young girls? And wasn’t he the one who caused Van Gogh to cut off his ear?
The talk is an examination of some of those myths, with an illustrated look at his life and art. Mette has always been interested in his art and legacy and has travelled to most of the places where he lived and worked, Tahiti, the Marquesas, Paris, Arles and Brittany also Copenhagen and Peru. Mette also looks at how being related to such a famous and notorious artist has affected his descendants especially those drawn to make art.
